The Decline....

We saw this advertisement in a local bus station, and although it sits well with out recycling and environmentally friendly beliefs, it certainly doesn’t sit well with our views of the supposedly intelligent people in government.

Suffolk county councils innappropriate sign

A quick first glance and it’s a great advert. However, look again, and this advert not only contains a word that isn’t in the oxford English dictionary, but also plays on a sexually slang word. The local authority, therefore condones the use of swear words, even, only if used in jest. What does this tell the future of our country, when learning the English language? The local authority actually paid an advertising agency to come up with this rather inappropriate advertising, which we think is money badly spent. Shouldn’t they be saving their (our) money and raising our standard of living with it?. Also, lets face it, the typical litter bug, is not going to read this advert and then whole heartedly and completely change their lives because of it. He / she will probably drop litter in front of it, to give a clear fingers up gesture to the local authority that has let them down so badly. Only education can change people minds, and this is not going to happen due to the lack of funding by the local authority. (I see the answer in here somewhere.)

In general, a threat might work, such as, “people found dropping litter will instantly be fined 100 pounds”, or how about actually paying the advertising agency to actually do their jobs. Think of something original, something that people will remember, and something that will make people stop and think about what they are doing.

I always say that they are no advertising agencies in the third world, to sum up my views of them. But this would be stereotypical, and I don’t want to be put into that category. There have been some great advertising campaigns done throughout the years, where a real sense of belonging was being handed out, with a clever, and sometimes subtle message. If you are working for an advertising agency and reading this, please take on board that you can have a successful campaign which will make you a lot of money, all it requires is thought. You can educate and inform, as well as grasp attention, and build awareness. If you are working for the local authority that paid and displayed this advert (Suffolk) then please remove it and, why not drop us a line here at nsr. We will, for free, come up with an advert that you can use (that’s putting our money where our mouths are!). We believe we can do this as all it comes down to, is the most beautiful phrase ever written on paper in the English language.

“Thoroughly thought through.”

And, if us designing your advert doesn’t sit well with you, why not try this; take your advert idea to all the local schools and tell them to come up with an advert in a competition. The children will enjoy learning about recycling and the reasons why we shouldn’t “toss” litter, and also you get a free advert. Added to this is the fact that you have just educated the next generation. Its, win – win –win.
