The skateboard trick dictionary

A
ACID DROP - to ride of an obstacle without ollying. Can also be applied to riding into a half-pipe leaning over the front truck so that you meet the contour of the ramp
AIRWALK - A grab trick involving holding the board with your front hadn, whilst split-kicking your legs, usually the more times you can "walk" while completing the trick, the better it is. Originally a trick invented by Tony Hawk, the trick was added to flatland tricks by Rodney Mullen
ALLEY-OOP - A trick performed in the air, whilst turning the opposite direction to what you are rotating
ANCHOR GRIND - a crooked grind without the back truck in the air. Similar to a smith grind
ANDRECHT INVERT - an invert with a backside grab, invented originally by Dave Andrecht
ANTI CASPER - a half impossible to nose casper. The skateboard is upside down with the point of the nose on the ground, raised at an angle and held up by the back foot, which is hooked under the deck. The front foot should be placed on the underside of the nose.
AXLE STALL - A stall with both skateboard trucks planeted on the lip or object. Similar to a 50-50 without moving.
 
B
BACKFLIP - pretty much as it say on the tin. Only possible off ramps
BACKSIDE - abbreviated to b/s, this is a term further used to define a trick involving rotation of the rider or board.When the skateboarder performs a trick or flip if his back foot is moving backwards, this is backside.
BACKSIDE AIR - jumping into the air, for example from a half-pipe, and performing a rotation in the direction your toes are facing.
BACKSIDE BONELESS - Unlike many tricks, where the rotation of the trick doesn't change how the trick is done, a boneless is done differently when done backside, the front foot is planted to the toeside of the deck instead of the heelside, and the front hand grabs the board on the heelside edge of the nose (unlike in a normal boneless, where the back hand grabs like an indy).
BACKSIDE GRAB - Grabbing the heelside of the board with the front hand between the heels, with the arm to the leading side of (and not between) the legs.
BACKSIDE OLLIE - A backside 180 degree ollie
BARLEY GRIND - A switch frontside 180 degree ollie into a frontside smith grind
BASTARD PLANT - A backside boneless to fakie
BENIHANA - A tail grab with the back hand holding the board whilst the back foot is taken off the board and extended down below the board on the heelside
BERTSLIDE - Planting a hand on the ground you slide the board and your body round 180 degrees. Seen mostly on very old Dogtown videos and invented by the Z-boys
BIG FLIP - A 360 degree flip with a body varial in the same direction
BIG SPIN - A combination of a 360 degree shuvit and a body varial in the same direction
BOARDSLIDE - A slide with the skateboard positioned over the middle of the obstacle or rail.
BODY JAR - A backside nosegrab, on a vert ramp where you smack the tail of the board on the coping on rentry
BODY VARIAL - Simply, a skateboarder turning in mid air without taking the skateboard itself with him (note that the skateboard can be spinning as well, just not in contact with the feet). Just jumping 180 degree on your board is a 180 degree body varial.
BONELESS - stepping off the skateboard with your front foot, jumping off that foot whilst holding the board with your back hand.
BURNTWIST - A 360 eggplant
 
C
CABALLERIAL (FULL CAB) - Fakie ollie 360
CASPERSLIDE - a slide where the board is flipped over, then caught with the back foot on the darkside of the tail and the front foot holding up the nose from the grip taped side, this is brought then into a slide on the peak of the tail.
CASPERFLIP - A trick where the board is flipped over, then caught upside down and flipped back, whilst being spun backside 180 degree on its vertical axis, all whilst in the air
CHRIST AIR - whilst in the air grab your board and hold it out in one hand whilst mimicking the crucification T shape with the rest of your body.
CROOKED GRIND - A grind on the front truck, with the tail pointing up, back, and away from the obstacle
 
D
DARKSLIDE - A slide along the middle of the deck on the griptaped (DARKSIDE) side
DARKSIDE - Darkside is the side of the deck that has the trucks mounted to it
DECK - the wooden part of a skateboard, usually made of maple
DISASTER - The hitting of the middle of the board over the coping on rentry from an air
DOG PISS - An aerial trick performed by grabbing mute by your front foot and kicking off your back foot as if you were a dog toiletting, hence the name
DROP IN - The act of going from a flat platform to a steep transition
 
E
EXTENSION - the part of a ramp where the transition extends higher than normal
 
F
FAKIE - Skating fakie is when your predominant foot is leading and will be used to initiate a trick
FAST PLANT - An ollie with the back foot planting on the ground and pushing off, while the board is controlled by the front foot and or a grab
FLIPTRICK - A fliptrick is a trick involving the board spinning on any or all of its axis.
FRONTSIDE - when a skater or board are spinning, they are spinning frontside when the rotation leads the skater or the toe edge of the board to turn immediately forwards
FRONTSIDE FLIP - frontside ollie 180 with kick-flip
FRONTSIDE GRAB - an indy grab whilst jumping frontside
 
G
GAY TWIST - A caballerial with a mute grab
GNARLY - amazing, sick, rad
GOOFY - goofy is when your normal stance has your left foot on the tail
GRAB - using either hand to grab anywhere on the board
GRIND - A huge variety of tricks where the hangers from the trucks grind along an obstacle
GRIPTAPE - The material which covers the top part of the deck and resembles sandpaper.
GROMMET / GROM - Little skate kids (or marks running partner from the marathon des sables!)
 
H
HALF CAB - fakie ollie 180
HALFPIPE - a ramp consisting of a flatbottom with concave transition leading to vertical sides
HANDRAIL - A banistar rail usually found next to stairs.
HARDFLIP - frontside 180 pop shuvit and kickflip
HEELFLIP - Making the board rotate around its lengthwise axis as a result of kicking your front foot off the toe edge of your board
 
I
IMPOSSIBLE - using either your front or back foot, the board is wrapped around the respective foot 360 degrees
INDY GRAB - Whilst performing a frontside or backside air, grab your toe edge with your back hand and poke your nose out.
INVERT - A trick that involves getting upside down and supporting yourself on one hand whilst performing a grab
 
J
JAPAN - a mute grab tweaked frontside 90 degrees
JUDO - grabbing the heel edge near the front wheel with your front hand and kicking the front foot off in front of you
 
K
K GRIND - see crooked grind
KICKFLIP - the rotation of the board about its lengthwise axis as a result of kicking your front foot off the heel edge of your board
KICKFLIP UNDERFLIP - fully rotated kickflip kicked back to rotate land in its original position
KINKED RAIL - a rail that is kinked or bent to increase its difficulty.
 
L
LATE TRICK - any trick after the board has reached its peak in the air or after another trick has been completed
LIEN AIR - gabbing the heel edge while airing frontside
LINE - the path or course planned through a park
LIPSLIDE - a slide in which the tail of the board goes up and over the obstacle and the board slides between the two trucks
LOCAL - a skater who is living near the park
 
M
MADOLLY - a madonna air with no grab
MADONNA - grab the heel edge near the front wheel with your front hand and kick your front foot off behind you
MANUAL - a balancing his trick keeping the front wheels off the ground
METHOD - Grabbing the heel edge of the board with your front hand and pulling that edge up towards your back
MONGO - pushing mongo is when you are using your incorrect foot to push
MUTE - grabbing your toe edge with your front hand while airing backside
 
N
NOLLIE - an ollie off the nose of the board rather than the tail
NOSE BONK - a very short nose grind of an obstacle
NOSE GRIND - a grind on the front truck
NOSE MANUAL - a manual performed on the front truck keeping the back wheels in the air
NOSE PICK - a stall in the nose grind position usually involving a nose grab for control
NOSE SLIDE - a slide on the nose of the deck
 
O
OLD SCHOOL - used to describe a trick or skater that is representative of an older, nearly outdated style
OLLIE - using your back foot to smack the tail of your board agains the ground, whilst your front foot slides forward along the grip tape causes the board to hop into the air.
 
P
PIVOT GRIND - a trick where the back of the truck is grinding on top of an obstacle for just a moment before the tricks completion
POLE JAM - riding up and off of a pole bent diagonally out of the ground
POP SHUVIT - a trick where the board is popped in the air where it rotates about its vertical axis
PRO - proffessional skater
PUMP - flexing your legs at the right moment to induce forward movement in the board
 
Q
QUARTERPIPE - half a halfpipe
 
R
RAD - see gnarly
RAIL - any type of rail of any size, material and height
REGULAR - you are regular footed if you normally skate with your right foot on the tail of the board
REVERT - a trick added to the end of any other trick, involving spinning 180 after completing the intial trick
ROASTBEEF - brabbing your heel edge with your back hand in front of your back leg
ROCKET AIR - once in the air put both feet on the tail facing length wise and grabbing the nose with both hands, keeping the body as straight as possible
 
S
SESSION - any time a group of skaters get together at a skate park or location
SEX CHANGE - a body varial while doing a trick
SHIFTY - sifting your board 90 degrees with feet still in contact with the board then bringing it back to its strating position
SHUFFLE - a sideways rentry into a transition which is then turned fakie
SKETCHY - used to describe a person or situation that isnt quite right
SLOB - a mute air brag whilst airing frontside
SMITH GRIND - a grind on the back truck with the nose pointing forward, down and away from the obstacle
STALEFISH - Grabbing your heel edge with your back hand behind your back leg
STICK - to land a trick solid and clean
SWITCH - you are riding switch when you are not using your dominant foot to initiate tricks
 
T
TAILSLIDE - a slide on the tail of the board
TAILGRAB - grabbing your tail with your back hand
TUCK KNEE - Grabbing your toe edge right near the back wheel with your back hand and pulling the board back as you push your knees forward
 
V
VARIAL SHUVIT - the spinning of the board along its vertical axis, without popping the board into the air
VERT - vertical
 
W
WALLIE - getting all four wheels ona vertical wall before ollieing
WALLRIDE - a trick entailing riding your board on a vertical wall
